The Perfect Chesapeake Gift

Still Water Bending by award-writing author and editor, Wendy Mitman Clarke, is more than an engaging and beautifully written Chesapeake story. It’s a also a mediation on how we chose to live our lives, on the values we each put on connection, belonging and the combined joys and trials of family. In this season of hygge (hunkering down beside-the-fire and cozy), it’s great (and affordable!) gift.

My family roots on the Eastern Shore go back several generations. As a native Shoreman, I have known and loved family like Jines Arley. They are unique, hard-working, stubborn and proud. This book pays homage to the waterman's way of life and brings home the trials and tribulations of the merging traditions of old and new ways of life on the Shore. No matter where one lives, family relationships are complex. Coming to terms with their personal histories, Lily Rae and her dad have a huge chasm to bridge. The journey to discover their place in each other's lives is emotional and difficult. This book captivated me from the first page. The characters are real and complex; the descriptions of this unique and challenging way of life are purposeful and real. This is a book I will be gifting to several friends and family.
